Weekly Wellness Minute: 3 Ways Pets Can Boost Your Mental Health
Date:Monday July 24, 2023
People everywhere love their pets, but did you know that bonding with an animal can actually provide significant health benefits? Here are just a few.
- Pets can reduce work-related stress. First responders work is very rewarding, but can also be very stressful. Studies show people with dogs tend to have lower blood pressure and are less likely to develop heart disease, and that spending time with pets reduces anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Being happy when you reconnect with your pet after a long shift isn’t just a feeling, it’s scientifically proven!
- Pets can help you be more active. They give you a reason to get outside, get some fresh air and get active, which is proven to improve your mood, sleep and mental health. Even playing games and interacting with them indoors can help reduce your screen time and get you off the couch.
- Pets provide a sense of togetherness. The bond with a pet helps you to not feel alone. When owners see, touch, hear or talk to their companion animals, it brings a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing and happiness. That wagging tail or satisfied purr shows that the feeling is mutual.
