Weekly Wellness Minute: How to Support Local First Responder Agencies – Part 1

Date:Monday May 22, 2023

As a first responder, you know how much it means to feel support from your community. We’ve rounded up some ideas for how people can show support for their local law enforcement, fire, and other public safety agencies. Share this video with your followers and community to give them ideas for ways to help. You can even do some of these things as a responder, for a responder. Show your support for your local neighboring agencies–it always feels good to be appreciated.

  • Wave and Say “Thanks!” When you see an officer or firefighter, give him or her a friendly greeting. Especially if it’s been a rough day, your smile and appreciation can go a long way.
  • Donate. If the department has a benevolent fund, consider donating to that. Many agencies manage a fund to care for the widows and children of fallen officers.
  • Compliment or Complain. If you had a positive interaction with an officer in your community that is worthy of praise, share it with the chief’s office. Similarly, if you have a complaint or a question, don’t hesitate to communicate. Look for information on the agency’s website or mobile app about how to submit complaints and commendations, as well as how this information is handled.

Follow Your Local Departments on Social Media. Many public safety agencies use social media to communicate with the public. Follow your local fire and public safety agencies on social media to stay aware of events in the community, various crime and traffic alerts, emergency response, and more.
